MULTILINGUAL VOCABULARY OF SOIL SCIENCE VOCABULAIRE MULTILINGUE DE LA SCIENCE DJ SOL VOCABULARIO MULTILINGUE DE LA CIENCIA DEL SUELO
The collection of terms, and of their equivalents in seven other languages, for the first edition of this vocabulary was begun by Dr. H. Greene in 1949, and a report and draft vocabulary were presented to the Fourth International Congress of Soil Science in Amsterdam in 1950 (Transactions, vol. 4, pp. 180-186). National nomenclature committees and Individuals in many countries submitted comments, corrections and additions, on the basis of which a revised draft was prepared by Mr. G.V. Jacks, who, after circulating the draft to collaborators, produced the fint edition of this vocabulary, which was published in 1954 and reprinted in 1955.
Soil scientists in various countries drew attention to imperfections and suggested improve- ments, and the whole problem was discussed at a special meeting of the International Society of Soil Science convened during the Sixth International Congress of Soil Science. This meeting, over which Dr. A. Muir presided, oppointed an advisory committee, to consider the preparation of a revised edition of the vocabulary, constituted as follows: Messrs. G.V. Jacks (U.K., Chairman), G. Aubert (France, Vice-Chairman), A. Azevedo (Portugal), A. Hoyos de Castro (Spain), G. Passerini (Italy), F Scheffer (Germany), R. Tavernier (Belgium), G. Torstensson (Sweden), 1 Tyurin (U.S.SRI), F. van Baren (Netherlands) and C. van Bavel (Netherlands and U.S.A.). It was recommended that the Centre de Cartographie des Sols, Ghent, in co-operation with the advisory committee, should collect suggestions and corrections and that the new edition, in which Russian equivalents and definitions were to be included, should be published by FAO.
The advisory committee met of the Centre in Ghent in May 1958, at the kind invitation of Professor Tavernier, the following members (or in some cases representatives nominated by them) being present: Messrs, G.V. Jocks, (U.K., Chairman), S. Hénin (France), I, Tyurin (U.S.S.R.), H. Kuron (Germany), A. Hoyos de Castro (Spain), G. Steur and J. Jantzen (Netherlands), J. Kirkham (U.S.A), J. Amerijckx and J. Lozet (Belgium); the meeting was also attended by Professor F van Baren, Secretary-General of the International Society of Soil Science, and by Professor R. Tavernier, of the Centre de Cartographie des Sols, Ghent, convener of the meeting. A progress report on the collection of material was presented, and national committees were urgently requested to send in their comments by December 1958.
