ANNUAL REVIEW OF ENTOMOLOGY Vol. 29
Many of our readers may not be aware of how review topics are selected for inclusion in the Annual Review of Entomology. This is a difficult and often complex procedure that the Editorial Committee struggles with each year. The Editorial Committee members are selected for a five-year term on the basis of their broad knowledge of speciality areas within entomology. Particularly important is their knowledge of research, both nationally and internationally, in their own and related areas of expertise. Fields of interest within Entomology that are emphasized in the Annual Review of Entomology are Acarology, Agricultural Entomology, Apiculture and Pollination, Behavior, Biochemis- try, Biological Control, Bionomics, Ecology, Forest Entomology, Genetics, History, Insecticides and Toxicology, Medical and Veterinary Entomology, Morphology, Paleoentomology, Pathology, Physiology, Population Ecology, Social Insects, Systematics, Evolution and Biogeography, and Vectors of Plant Pathogens. The number of topics chosen within each category is governed by general guidelines. Each year between two and three hundred potential articles are discussed, and there is usually spirited debate among the Editorial Commit- tee as to which subjects should be chosen.
After the Committee has made its final decisions on the composition of a Volume and has recommended authors for each subject, the Editor contacts the potential authors and invites them to develop the review articles. The high acceptance rate affirms that an invitation to write a review article for the Annual Review of Entomology is a high honor in our profession.
The dedication to quality, of both our authors and the staff of the Annual Reviews, has been outstanding. We thank our Production Editor, Ms. J. L. Cohen, for the effective way she has handled the many demanding tasks of this office. We also acknowledge the high quality of work by the compositor and printer of this Volume.
Above all, our gratitude and appreciation goes to Ray F. Smith, who is relinquishing his position on the Editorial Committee after 30 years of devotion to the Review as Senior Editor and Chairman of the Committee. We thank Ray for his valuable contributions, advice, and most of all for his friendship. The entomological community at large will forever be indebted to Ray for his role in establishing the Annual Review of Entomology as the standard of excellence in our profession
