ANNUAL REVIEW OF ENTOMOLOGY Vol.28
Writing a good review paper requires both considerable time and effort. It is particularly gratifying therefore that the Annual Review of Entomology manages to attract so many eminent contributors year after year. This success is primarily attributable to the prestige of the Annual Review of Entomology and the high academic standard it offers to its readership.
Annual Review series are unique among review publications in that they cover many different areas of expertise in each volume. This is particularly evident in the Annual Review of Entomology, which encompasses a wide selection of topics from taxonomy to molecular biology. Although most readers are likely to first peruse the few chapters closely aligned with their special interests, they quickly discover other chapters that help them ac- quire a general background in established disciplines and an introduction to newly emerging topics in entomology. It is always exciting to read a review by a scientist who has contributed extensively to the subject being treated. By reading such chapters, one can often develop insights into how knowledge evolves and how major discoveries are made.
Selection of contributors and the appropriate chapter topics for inclusion in a volume of the Review is the responsibility of the Editorial Committee (see preliminary pages). Each Committee considers the hundreds of perti- nent suggestions and recommendations received from various sectors of the entomological community during the year(s) prior to its deliberations. The input from our international panel of Foreign Correspondents (see prelimi- nary pages) is particularly valuable in this selection process. Space limita- tions restrict both the number of articles in each volume and the extent of coverage possible in a given article. Hopefully, we have resolved the dilemma of breadth versus depth in a satisfactory manner. Also, in this regard, suggestions from our readership are always welcome.
