ANNUAL REVIEW OF ENTOMOLOGY Vol. 31
How valuable is the Annual Review of Entomology to its readers? The most basic function of a scientific review is to provide an up-to-date source of useful references on a given subject. A good review will also critically evaluate past work and identify new and exciting research fronts. We are confident that the more than 700 articles published in the past 30 volumes of the Review have accomplished both these functions, and that collectively these articles con- stitute a virtually complete library on the biology, physiology, and economic importance of insects and related arthropods. We are proud that a recent analysis by Eugene Garfield ("Journal citation studies: 41 entomological jour- nals-What they cite and what cites them," Current Contents, 1984, 11:3-11) found the Annual Review of Entomology one of the most consulted and referred-to publications in the entomological literature. We will strive to insure that future articles will continue to present timely, critical, and innovative topics of lasting value.
We thank the authors of the reviews, our Production Editors J. L. Cohen and A. L. Perlis, and the compositors and printers for their dedication and for their continued efforts to maintain the high standards of the Review
