ANNUAL REVIEW OF ENTOMOLOGY Vol.30
Annual Review of Entomology-readers, authors, and editorial committee members- is keenly aware. If the first half of this century belonged to the theoretical physicists, the second half is clearly being dominated by biological scientists, not the least of whom are entomologists. The metamorphic wonders of insects have made them ideal subjects for modern research topics as disparate as molecular genetics and sociobiology. These arthropods have clearly become preeminent as candidates for contemporary biological studies, and the inves- tigative pace is both dizzying and exciting. More than ever, the Annual Review of Entomology has become a sine qua non for keeping abreast of the rapid strides that have become commonplace in today's world of entomology.
The members of the Editorial Committee recognize their responsibility to provide a thorough coverage of the rapid developments that characterize entomological research in the 1980s. Genetic engineering, sexual selection theory, and chemisociality are now considered as logical candidates for Annual Review of Entomology chapters, a situation hardly dreamed of a decade ago. This does not mean that the foundational areas that have always constituted the prime substance of entomology-morphology, taxonomy, behavior, and phy- siology-do not still receive the attention they deserve. However, even these subjects have been caught up in the sweep of the current entomological research revolution, as illustrated by the emergence of cladistics (taxonomy) and repro- ductive competition studies (behavior), to name just a few examples. For the researcher, these are fascinating times, and the Annual Review of Entomology proudly accepts the challenge of making this excitement available to its read- ers. We feel that "the best is yet to come!"
We would like to point out to our readers that in this volume the Cumulative Indexes of Contributing Authors and Chapter Titles include the contents of the past 30 years of the Annual Review of Entomology. We anticipate that this addition will provide a valuable overview of the topics reviewed since the inception of the Review in 1956.
The quality that we associate with the Annual Review of Entomology is by no small means due to the expertise and dedication of Joan Cohen, the Production Editor. Her outstanding skills allow Editorial Committee members to concen- trate on their responsibility-selecting the most appropriate chapter topics and
then choosing the most qualified authors to review them. We are likewise
blessed with excellent compositors and printers. Working with such profes-
sionals makes it a pleasure to be an Editorial Committee member for the Annual
Review of Entomology
