ANNUAL REVIEW OF ENTOMOLOGY Vol. 36

With this volume of the Annual Review of Entomology, my colleagues Frank J. Radovsky and Vincent H. Resh join me as the designated Editors of the Review. This change in their status (from Associate Editors) reflects an overdue recognition of the fact that we have shared equally, for several years, the numerous duties for which the scientific editors of an annual review are responsible. In close collaboration with a professional Production Editor, we have striven to ensure that the Annual Review of Entomology provides our readership with entomological reviews of the highest quality (and at the lowest cost a nonprofit organization such as Annual Reviews Inc. can offer).

As members of an Editorial Committee consisting of eight eminent ento- mologists from the USA and Canada, we also participate in the vital process of selecting a broad spectrum of topics for inclusion in successive volumes of the Review and in the nomination of potential authors to write those articles.

On average, we publish 25 chapters each year in the Annual Review of Entomology. Although editors of journals that publish considerably more manuscripts may envy our relatively light and seasonal work load, even our invited articles frequently pose complex and demanding challenges. Con- sistently, the publication process involves a series of most interesting and rewarding activities. As we follow successive articles from their conception to their birth two years later, we become progressively more attached to the Review. No wonder editors remain devoted to this task for so many years (and agree to serve a succession of five-year terms at the invitation of Annual Reviews Inc.).

Above all, we thank the authors of Volume 36 for their valuable contribu- tions. The conscientious efforts of our Production Editor, Amanda Suver, and the high quality of the work done by our compositors and printers also deserve special recognition.
