ANNUAL REVIEW OF ENTOMOLOGY Vol. 37
Since my introduction to the Annual Review of Entomology as an un dergraduate student at Oregon State University over 20 years ago, the Review has been a mainstay of my personal library and continues to meet my changing needs.
As a student, I looked to each new volume to provide a timely overview of important subject areas within entomology and a ready entry into the impor- tant literature on selected topics of genuine interest or those needed to prepare a term paper. Now in my capacity as a university professor engaged in both research and teaching, I expect the review articles to provide a critical and in-depth analysis of subject areas in which I have a deep interest, as well as a perspective on where research in a particular area is leading. At the same time, however, I continue to rely on the Annual Review of Entomology as one very important means of broadening my perspectives and my knowledge in entomology. This latter function has become increasingly important as the science of entomology has become more specialized, and as the flow of new information and the number of scientific journals publishing entomological works have increased. I have also found that rereading older volumes pro- vides a valuable historical perspective on both the nature and the pace of changes in our science.
Throughout the years, the Annual Review of Entomology has continued to meet these somewhat diverse needs most effectively. This is clearly a tribute to the authors, the editors, and the selection process by which subjects and authors are chosen each year by the Editorial Committee.
It has been my good fortune over the past five years to have been involved in the process of selecting topics and authors for several volumes. I have found the thoughtful discussions and the give-and-take that lead the Editorial Committee to the final selection of topics for a given volume challenging and stimulating. The process is clearly driven by a strong desire of the Editorial Committee members to continue a long tradition of excellence in providing a diverse readership with both balanced coverage of a continually advancing science and critical in-depth reviews of specific topics.
I conclude my term on the Editorial Committee with a deep sense of gratitude for the dedication of the past and current Editors and members of the Editorial Committees who have worked diligently to establish and maintain this tradition of excellence.
The contributions of the authors of Volume 37 are gratefully acknowl- edged, as are the conscientious efforts of Amanda Suver, the Production Editor, and the high quality work of the compositor and printer.
