ANNUAL REVIEW OF ENTOMOLOGY Vol. 39
I wonder if students of entomology really appreciate the value of the Annual Review of Entomology. Of course they use it frequently and probably come to rely on it, but I doubt they often stop to think what they would do without it. When I began my career in entomology, a little over 40 years ago, I regularly scanned the greater part of the entomological literature. That was nothing unusual it was just what one did. It probably took an afternoon every two or three weeks.
How impossible that is today. The mushrooming number of journals dealing, exclusively or otherwise, with entomological topics has made such a practice out of the question. One is even lucky to find a library that holds them all. Add to the journals the plethora of multiauthor books encompassing entomology, and one begins to appreciate the magnitude of the task. Not only are there more papers, but whole new fields have emerged, each with its own jargon that makes understanding difficult.
Hence, since its first publication 39 years ago, the Annual Review of Entomology has been a godsend. Initially, the authoritative reviews were very useful. Now, they are essential if one is to maintain any grasp of the field beyond one's immediate research interests. Recently, while teaching a course in insect physiology, I turned to the Review for support in an area with which I am not very familiar. Not only did I find what I wanted, I was enthralled by the elegance of the work in what was, for me, a different field, and I hope I conveyed that feeling to the students. Without the Annual Review of Entomol- ogy, such an experience would not have been possible.
It has been a great privilege to serve on the Editorial Committee of the Review over the past five years. From the outside, one sometimes wonders how topics are selected and what efforts are made to get the best and most appropriate reviews. From the inside, one learns to appreciate just how much thought does go into selecting both topics and authors. It is always refreshing to discover that one's colleagues are so deeply involved. It has also been an enjoyable experience, and I thank all those who have contributed to making it So.
On behalf of the Editorial Committee, I extend our thanks to the authors of Volume 39 for contributing another set of excellent reviews. I also acknowl- edge the contributions of Amanda Suver, the Production Editor, and the staffs of Kachina Typesetting and Kingsport Press for their efforts in producing this publication.
