Once again this preface provides the Editorial Committee with an op- portunity to thank the contributors for the time and effort that have made the presentation of this volume possible. The preparation of concise and critical reviews becomes increasingly difficult with the continuing increase in the annual output of research contributions which vary widely in sig- nificance and competence. We also thank those who have suggested topics of interest for review and hope readers will continue to suggest subjects on which they believe reviews would be helpful.

As usual, the reviews in this volume cover a wide range of interests. In this day of specialization it is unlikely that all chapters will be of equal inter- est to all readers, but most of them contain assessments of recent develop- ments that have wide applicability. As authors Moss and Hendrickson point out in their chapter on Numerical Taxonomy, "Few experiences match the boredom of listening to the revision of an unfamiliar taxon, unless that re- vision contains new concepts, methods, or approaches that are applicable across a variety of other groups, including one's own." These authors bear their own caution well in mind, and their chapter is a model of skillful and witty winnowing which will hold the interest of readers in any specialty.

We are sorry to have to report that Miss Beryl Daniel, our very com- petent Senior Assistant Editor, has retired because of ill health. Her enthusi- asm and untiring effort not only maintained the quality of our publication but provided encouragement to all of us. We thank her again for her un- failing assistance over the years; we will miss her, and we wish her well. We extend a cordial welcome to our new Assistant Editor, Miss Jean E. Mc- Comish, and express our sincere thanks for her diligence in the preparation of this volume. Our thanks also go to the George Banta Company for their customary skill and meticulous care in the production of this volume
