After two decades of uninterrupted publication of Annual Review of Entomology, it would seem appropriate to review the charge of the original Editorial Committee. In the preface of Volume 1 the objectives were defined thus: "To publish authorita- tive and concise treatments of definitive subjects of current interest.... These reviews will be solicited judiciously from the leaders in the fields concerned. It is our hope that each review will present a critical analysis of recent literature and, insofar as is feasible, an appraisal of the present status of the subject."

During this period, 440 internationally recognized authorities have consistently met these objectives by providing us with 367 articles reviewing the latest develop- ments in entomology. In addition, 25 authors joined in writing a comprehensive volume on the history of entomology, which was published in 1973. The members of the Editorial Committee wish to express their sincere appreciation to all these contributors. Moreover, the unique partnership that was forged between the En- tomological Society of America and Annual Reviews Inc. has continued to function and prosper. The financial status of the Review is sound, thanks in large measure to the support which individual entomologists and libraries have given the publica- tion through their continuing subscriptions.

The emergence of Annual Review of Entomology coincided with an especially dynamic period riod in the history of entomology. For example, the development of the concept of integrated pest management in the broadest context has provided many new opportunities and challenges for the professional entomologist. A review of the tables of contents of the past 20 volumes clearly indicates that authors have identi- fied and critically analyzed the significant developments associated with this exciting scientific discipline.

Finally, the high technical quality of the Review maintained over the past two decades owes much to the painstaking efforts of our Assistant Editors and to the meticulous care and skill of the compositors and printers
