ANNUAL REVIEW OF ENTOMOLOGY Vol. 23
The Committee appreciates the many valuable suggestions for review topics, which we hope will continue to be submitted by readers of the Annual Review of En- tomology. We remain confident that the contents of this volume will again be of interest to generalists as well as to specialists in different fields of entomology. Suggestions from our overseas readers are particularly welcome as they draw our attention to important developments in entomology throughout the world.
We are most grateful to the authors for their efforts in writing these authoritative chapters. Although the Editorial Committee offers some guidance to the invited authors as to the scope of the articles, each author has the freedom to develop a subject within the confines of page limitations and production schedules. The neces sary disavowal of responsibility by Annual Reviews Inc. and the Editors for state- ments expressed by contributors to the Review emphasizes this freedom.
We thank our Production Editor, Ms. Roberta Little, for the splendid way she has handled the numerous demanding tasks that led to the publication of this volume. Much credit is also due to the compositors and printers for once again attaining the high standards expected of ARE.
It is with considerable regret that for the second time in as many years we must announce the retirement of one of ARE's Editors. This year, Dr. Carroll N. Smith, who contributed so notably to the success of the Review over the past ten years, both as a member of the Editorial Committee and later as one of the Editors, is retiring with the publication of this volume. We are greatly indebted to Carroll for his valuable counsel and his devotion to the Review
