ANNUAL REVIEW OF ENTOMOLOGY Vol. 27
As readers may know, there is a standing invitation to entomologists to offer suggestions for topics to be reviewed in the Annual Review of Entomology. Many valuable suggestions are provided by entomologists at large and by contributors to earlier volumes. At their annual meeting, members of the Editorial Committee and their invited guests discuss these and their own proposed topics, and attempt to develop a well-balanced selection of signifi- cant and timely aspects of entomology to make up a subsequent volume of the Review. It is a fascinating and highly educative exercise to take part in choosing subject matter and nominating appropriate authors to be invited to write on each selected topic. It is also a difficult exercise, as the scope of the debate may extend to any part of the field of entomology in its widest sense and may thus exceed the range of expertise not only of individual
members but also of the Committee as a whole. In the Preface to Volume 22 (1977) the Editorial Committee noted that the Annual Review of Entomology might well be improved by a more cosmopolitan orientation in the selection of subjects and authors. Over the years, scientists in the United States have written almost two-thirds of the published reviews, and over 80% stem from English-speaking countries. Members of the Editorial Committee are currently drawn entirely from North America, so perhaps this is to be expected. Nevertheless, en- tomology, like other branches of science, is not affected by national or regional interests, and our requirement that contributions be in the English language may limit the interest or significance of the volumes on a world- wide basis; it may certainly fail to represent fully the many important advances, and even distinctive fields of endeavor, that take place in Europe, Asia, Africa, or South America.
The Editorial Committee has considered this problem in recent meetings and last year established, on a trial basis, an Advisory Board of Foreign Correspondents, whose names are listed in the front of the book. The function of the Board is to assist the Annual Review of Entomology in enhancing and extending its international coverage, especially from beyond the English-speaking countries. The proposals for reviews and authors submitted by these correspondents will be considered by the Editorial Com- mittee together with suggestions from all other sources.
We again offer our thanks to our Production Editor, Joan Cohen, for the effective way she has dealt with the numerous tasks that are involved in the publication of this Review. We also acknowledge with pleasure the high quality of work done by the compositor and printer of this volume.
