Technique Of Organic Chemistry Vol. VII
Since the appearance of the first edition of Organic Solvents in 1935
many advances have been made in the field. The systematic determination
and evaluation of physical properties has continued in this country and
abroad and a wealth of new and accurate data has become available,
particularly for the hydrocarbons. This work has been accompanied by
new and improved methods for the preparation, purification and char-
acterization of solvents
In the second edition many solvents have been added and some have
been deleted. The additions and omissions were, of necessity, somewhat
arbitrary. Mixed solvents, such as ligroin, benzin, oil of turpentine and
the mixed xylenes, were removed to make room for new pure solvents,
but many compounds were not ineluded because the information available
was too meager
As an aid in their selection, the solvents have again been classifed
according to chemical principles. They are listed in this order in Chapter
I, together with the synonyms of their names. The number of properties
in the tables in Chapter III has been increased by twelve and the values
for some, such as density and refractive index, are given at several tem-
peratures. The usefulness of the physical data has been extended by a
collection of physicochemical relations which permit extrapolation, or
the estimation of physical constants from related data (Chapter II).
Criteria of purity are reviewed in Chapter IV, and the methods of
purification of the solvents are given in Chapter V. Sinee many of the
solvents present health hazards, data on toxicology have been added.
In Chapter III the solvents are also tabulated according to their boiling
points, freezing points, dielectric constants and dipole moments.
It is hoped that the book will serve not only the organie and physical
chemist, but also the research engineer and others interested in the use
and in the physical properties JO organic solvents.
We wish to acknowledge our indebtedness to the original authors for
their assistanee in the preparation of this edition, and to Dr. David W.
