Aphid ecology
This book is about the ecology of a group of small, sap-sucking insects, the aphids, some of which are serious pests of agricultural crops and forest trees. The association of aphids with plants is considered in relation to certain of the features that aphids developed early in their evolution. In particular, the book explains how the modes of feeding and reproduction of aphids have led to a very close and specific association with plants and have affected their size and population structure, and it accounts for the paucity of species in the tropics. This book is written for specialists, postgraduates and advanced under- graduates in entomology, but I hope that other people will find it interesting. I am grateful for the opportunity to acknowledge the help of all my students, in particular Scamus Ward, in developing the ideas presented here. A number of people have helped in the preparation of this book. I am especially grateful to my wife, to Angela Risebrow and to Julian Entwistle for reviewing the manuscript and offering plentiful and excellent advice, and to Drs Aoki, Bromley, Gibson, Jukes and Tjallingii for supplying photographs used in the text. I also wish to thank Sue Mitchell for preparing the figures, and Gwen Thompson for typing the manuseript.
