GENERAL SETTING GEOLOGY SUMMARY OF GEOLOGICAL HISTORY ECONOMIC GEOLOGY BIBLIOGRAPHY INTRODUCTION The North Sumatra Project (NSP), under- taken during the period 1975-80 programme combining systematic geological reconnaissance mapping with regional geo- chemical prospecting, and formed part of the British Government's technical assistance was programme to developing countries. project covered Sumatra north of the Equator (ca. 190,000 km²) and the work was undertaken by a combined team of geologists from the Institute of Geological Sciences (IGS) and Overseas Development Administration, United Kingdom, and the Directorate of Mineral Resources (DMR), Indonesia. The prime aim of the project was the production of sixteen 1:250,000 scale geological maps, sheet explana- tions, and complimentary geochemical reports, with a view to evaluating the mineral potential of northern Sumatra. Further details of the The project were given by Page et al. (1978), including field logistics and details of a computerised field data-recording system. The present report covers one complete and two partial 1:250,000 Quadrangles, and these have been combined into two 1:250,000 maps.
